Plasmodium malariae female gametocyte in thin film - note eccentric compact chromatin with dark coarse pigment in non enlarged red cell (normal colour and no Schuffner's dots or Maurer's clefts present). (This is in a thick part of the film so not ideal but often P. malariae infections have low parasitemias so that it is necessary to thoroughly examine the blood films and the parasites are not always observed in areas of ideal thickness. Also film shows signs of aging)
